Edwardstown Photography Club

Annual Competitions

Besides the End of Year Competitions which are held in November each year, we also have our annual Photojournalism, Photo Essay, and Annual Project competitions.

Photojournalism is a record of any event which tells a story of what has happened, is happening or is about to happen, the sight of which excites or stimulates one of the human emotions. Set up portraits are excluded.

A Photo Essay comprises a set of four (4) images which when viewed together tell a story.

The Atkins Technicolour Annual Photographic Project is similar to a set subject competition, and will be judged on the same night as the annual Photo Essay and Photojournalism competitions.

The theme for 2010 is Landscape, Seascape or Cityscape. The Definitions are as follows:

Landscape

A landscape is a photograph of non-urban scenery that depicts the form of the land through the use of composition and light.

Rivers and lakes, people, animals, part of the sea, man-made structures and/or agricultural land use may be present as incidental to the photograph and, where included, must support the depiction of the form and features of the landscape.  None of these elements should visually dominate the overall photograph.

Seascape (includes Inland Waters)

A seascape is a photograph of coastal scenery, a wave study, or a picture of the open sea, provided always that the sea is the centre of interest of the photograph.  Large saltwater inlets and inland waters are eligible.

People, boats and man-made structures may be present as incidental to the photograph and, where included, must support the depiction of the form and features of the seascape.  None of these elements should visually dominate the overall photograph.

Cityscape (or Townscape)

The urban equivalent of a landscape, a cityscape (or townscape) depicts the built form and shape of a city or town (or one of its parts) through general or broad views of buildings and/or streets through the use of composition and light.

Architectural detail images of one (or more) buildings are not considered cityscapes.

***        Please note that the landscape and seascape definitions have been amended from the standard definitions included on the Australian Photographic Society website.
